PostSubject: Keep Your Lab From Getting Fat   Fri Feb 08, 2008 11:37 pm

I have found the best way to keep my dogs from getting overweight is to feed them only dog food and only 5 cups of food a day MAX of low calorie or very healthy dog food. I have both my Labs on Beneful dog chow and feed my yellow Lab 1 cup a day (vet recommended, sometimes she gets more) and my black Lab gets around 4-5 cups a day. Some Labs tend to put on the weight and others don't. I would, on average, feed your dog 3 cups of food a day of healthy dog food or low calorie dog food, and do NOT give out table scraps not matter how cute Scruffy looks.. that is the #1 cause of obesity in dogs. OH, and of course routine exercise, at least an hour a day.

Yes I have found our lab girl to put weight on very easily, and we dont feed her any scapes, although many times she has raided the fridge or the cupboard, labs seem to find a way of finding food no matter what we do.

Our boy is a very slim build and doesnt seem to put the weight on at all, but our girl did get quite overweight for a while and we had to put her on a diet recommended by the vet.

What food do you feed yours ? if you dont mind me asking.

Our seem to prefer bakers complete but i was wondering if maybe that contributes to her getting fat..

I currently have my dogs on Beneful brand dog food, which I will be switching once we run out and I will be switching them over to Blue Buffalo. My yellow Lab will be going onto the Low Calorie brand of Blue Buffalo and my black will be on the puppy chow brand. I've done some research and it has really good ingredients and looks nice. I've heard all the Petco, Wal-Mart brands of dog foods are low quality and crap.
